002 | The Time We Swapped Names
In my first solo episode, I talk about one funny aspect of my experience as one of the first six females to join the male-dominated astronaut corps: the fact that we women would often and inexplicably be confused with one another.
In this episode, I share the story of how my co-astronaut Sally Ride came up with the idea to switch name tags at an event and see how many people noticed. I talk about different people’s reactions and the hilarious confusion that came about when we were asked for our autographs.
“Everybody in NASA loves to have astronauts around.”

“Somewhere around the Florida space coast, there probably are a dozen or two signed sheets of paper that have two Kathy Sullivans or two Sally Rides on them. And I’m sure the people that own them have not any real clue quite how that happened. But I bet they would go for a lot of Ebay, don’t you think?”

Spaceship Not Required
I’m Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean.
I’m an explorer, and that doesn’t always have to involve going to some remote or exotic place. It simply requires a commitment to put curiosity into action.
In this podcast, you can explore, reflecting on lessons learned from life so far and from my brilliant and ever-inquisitive guests. We explore together in this very moment from right where you are… spaceship not required.
Welcome to Kathy Sullivan Explores.
